Meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol (JPSG)

24 - 25 September, European Parliament, Brussels

The Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol was established by the Speakers Conference on the basis of Article 51 of the Europol Regulation which entered into force on 1 May 2017. The constituent meeting took place in October 2017 in Brussels.

This parliamentary scrutiny body, composed of members of national parliaments and of the European Parliament is tasked with political monitoring and examination of Europol’s activities: The Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation has to submit numerous documents related to its actions and has to consult the JPSG prior to a decision of the multiannual programme. Also the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is obliged to give information once a year to the JSPG.

The meetings take place twice a year under the co-chair of the European Parliament. During the first half of the year the JPSG convenes in the member state holding the presidency of the Council of the EU, during the second half of the year the Scrutiny Group meets in Brussels in the European Parliament. The national parliaments delegate up to four members each, the European Parliament sends up to 16 members.

During the Austrian Presidency the Chairperson of the Committee on Internal Affairs of the National Council, Angela Lueger (SPÖ), together with the Chairperson of the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Claude Moraes (S&D), will preside over the meeting.

As the Scrutiny Group’s field of activity is stipulated by law, also the topics and the speakers will be defined along the activities of Europol determined in the regulation and along the documents to be examined.

The conference is open to the public via Livestream.
