Berndt Körner

Berndt Körner was born in Völkermarkt, Carinthia, on 21 April 1961. He graduated in Law at the University in Graz and started his professional career in 1991 as a civil servant working in the Burgenland at the border to Hungary. In 1994, working at regional level for the Government of the Burgenland, Mr. Körner was also temporarily posted, in the course of the preparation for the EU accession of Austria, at the Federal Chancellery. Two years later, he joined the Ministry of Interior, where he was then a member of a team preparing Austria’s accession to Schengen. At the Ministry, e later headed the Ministry of Interior’s Department for General Security Matters and then the Department for Migration, visa matters and legal aspects of border control.

After being active during the Austrian EU Presidency in 2006, Mr. Körner in 2010 joined the Council of the EU, where he worked as a Seconded National Expert for Schengen evaluation until 2013 coordinating Schengen evaluation visits at air-, land- and sea borders to most of the Schengen member states. For nearly two years before taking up his post at Frontex, Mr. Körner finally served in Albania as an expert on Integrated Border Management within PAMECA IV, an EU funded technical assistance project that assisted key Albanian law enforcement agencies by offering expertise drawn from EU Member States closely cooperating with customs, public order police, anti-trafficking and anti-terrorism as well as IOM, UNHCR, UNDP, OSCE, ICITAP, and EXBS.

Since 4 January 2016 Mr. Körner is the Deputy Executive Director of Frontex – the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
