Thomas Mayr-Harting

Ambassador Thomas Mayr-Harting is Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia in the European External Action Service. From 2011 to 2015 he served as Head of the EU Delegation (EU Ambassador) to the United Nations. From 2008 to October 2011 he was Permanent Representative of Austria to the UN in New York. In this capacity, he represented Austria on the UN Security Council in 2009 and 2010.

Between 2003 and 2008 Mr. Mayr-Harting served as Political Director of the Foreign Ministry of Austria. From 1999 to 2003 he was the Austrian Ambassador to Belgium and NATO.

Mr. Mayr-Harting joined the Austrian diplomatic service in 1979. He served, inter alia, at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow, as Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Austrian Foreign Minister and as Director for Security Policy. From 2002 to 2004 he was also Austrian Special Representative for the Western Balkans.

Mr. Mayr-Harting received his law degree at the University of Vienna and then specialized in European law at the College of Europe in Bruges. In 1978, Mr. Mayr-Harting was awarded the Diploma of The Hague Academy of International Law. He is a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and Natolin (Poland).
