Wolfgang Sobotka

Wolfgang Sobotka was born on January 5, 1956 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, a town in Lower Austria. In addition to studying history at the University of Vienna (graduating as Mag. phil.), he also completed studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (violoncello and music education) and at the Bruckner Conservatoire in Linz (conducting).

He held a teaching post at a secondary academic school in Waidhofen an der Ybbs and was head of the local music school. Wolfgang Sobotka also held a position as a lecturer at Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts.

In the course of his career, Wolfgang Sobotka has also served in numerous political functions. After ten years as a member of Waidhofen’s municipal council, he was elected Mayor in his home town. Shortly after that he was appointed a member of the Regional Government of Lower Austria and was subsequently elected Deputy Governor of Lower Austria. Between April 2016 and December 2017 he served as Federal Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Austria.

He is the Regional Chairman of the Austrian People’s Party’s Employees Association (ÖAAB) in Lower Austria, president of the Alois Mock Institute - Forum für Zukunftsfragen and president of the European Garden Association - Natur im Garten - International. Wolfgang Sobotka is still a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Waidhofen an der Ybbs as well as of the town’s museum association.

Wolfgang Sobotka has been a member of the National Council since 9 November 2017 and was elected President of the National Council on 20 December 2017.
