AVISO:The Enlargement Perspective of the Western Balkans and the Role of the Parliaments

Panel discussion with participants representing national parliaments, the European Parliament, the EU Commission and the scientific community
Vienna – Bringing the Western Balkan countries closer to the European Union is a main focus of the Austrian EU Presidency. The role which national parliaments can play in this context – explaining the significance of the enlargement process to the citizens of the Western Balkan countries, for example – will be discussed by representatives of national parliaments, the European Parliament, the EU Commission and the scientific community at the Austrian parliament on Tuesday, 9 October, at the invitation of National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka.
The panel discussion will be opened by National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, the keynote speech will be given by Norbert Lammert, Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and former President of the German Bundestag.
Participants in the discussion, which will focus on the role of national parliaments and the involvement of the European Parliament in the Western Balkans enlargement process and how parliamentarians from the Western Balkan countries can support their countries’ integration into the EU, will be Director-General for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson, Member of the French National Assembly and Deputy Chairperson of the European Affairs Committee Liliana Tanguy, European Parliament Member Michael Gahler and Oliver Jens Schmitt, Professor of Southeast European history at the University of Vienna. The meeting will be concluded with statements by Austrian Members of Parliament representing the five parties that currently hold seats there.
