9 October 2018, Parliament-Hofburg, Vienna

Bringing the Western Balkans closer to the European Union is one of the priorities of the Austrian EU Presidency. EU approximation of the countries of South-Eastern Europe also has to be advanced and supported at parliamentary level. At the invitation of Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council, this topic will be discussed by representatives of national parliaments, the European Parliament, the European Commission and academia. The opening statement will be delivered by Norbert Lammert, former long-standing President of the German Bundestag and now Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

The "Western Balkans Strategy" adopted by the European Commission in February 2018 underlines the importance of "ensuring constructive dialogue across the political spectrum, notably within the parliaments" as an essential challenge of the enlargement process in the Western Balkans. Possible forms and modalities of inter-parliamentary cooperation will be discussed. What can national parliaments of the EU Member States do in order to convince their populations of the importance of the Western Balkans enlargement process? How can parliamentarians in the countries of the Western Balkan contribute towards EU integration of their countries?

Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in German, English and French.

The panel discussion is open to the press. Here you find all details about media accreditation.
