EU Presidency: Interparliamentary Conference on SECG on 17 and 18 September

Austrian Parliament, 10 September 2018

The conference is to focus on the Multiannual Financial Framework, competition, digitalisation and the fight against tax evasion

Vienna (PK) - The Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Policy Coordination and Governance (SECG) in the EU will take place on 17 and 18 September 2018 in the context of the Parliamentary Dimension of the Austrian EU presidency. The meeting will focus on the Multiannual Financial Framework and the fight against tax evasion. The conference venue is the Austria Center Vienna, the permanent conference facility and media centre of the Austrian EU Presidency.

The conference will be inaugurated by Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council, and Inge Posch-Gruska, President of the Federal Council, and chaired by Karlheinz Kopf, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the National Council.

On the first day of the conference, Niels Thygesen, Chairman of the European Fiscal Board, and Gottfried Haber, Vice-President of the Austrian Fiscal Council, will discuss the implementation of a fiscal policy framework for the EU.

The second session will then focus on investment, innovation and education as drivers for a competitive Europe. Input statements will be delivered, among others, by Wilhelm Molterer, Managing Director of the European Fund for Strategic Investments.

The second day of the conference will be devoted to the fight against tax evasion in the EU. Pierre Moscovici, Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, and Hubert Fuchs, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance, will address this issue in their input statements.

Finally, the parliamentarians will also discuss digitalisation and its impact on employment. One of the input statements will come from Milena Angelova, Vice-President of the European Economic and Social Committee.

Conference on Stability, Economic Policy Coordination and Governance in the EU (SECG)

This conference will help enhance the involvement of national parliaments and the European Parliament in the debate on EU economic policy coordination, with the aim of ensuring democratic accountability in the areas of economic governance and budgetary policy in the EU. There are also plans to intensify exchanges between the European Commission, the European Parliament and national parliaments and make them regular events.

Article 13 of the “Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in Economic and Monetary Union" ("Fiscal Treaty"), which entered into force on 1 January 2013 and explicitly provides for the establishment of a parliamentary conference, forms the underpinning for this meeting.
