Austrian Presidency
of the Council of the European Union 2018
Austria assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the third time from 1 July until 31 December 2018. Within this task Austria, as representative of the Council vis-à-vis other EU institutions, played a crucial role. It was on the one hand responsible for the negotiations and consultations of the Council regarding EU-legislation and political provisions. On the other hand Austria had to coordinate the cooperation of the EU member states.
Together with Estonia and Bulgaria, Austria held the so called trio presidency. A group of three member states holding the presidency one after another consecutively, work together during an 18 month period to ensure more continuity throughout the three presidencies.

On the basis of Article 13 of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union (Fiscal Treaty), which entered into force on 1 January 2013, a new parliamentary body, the Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union” was established the same year. Bringing the Western Balkans closer to the European Union is one of the priorities of the Austrian EU Presidency. EU approximation of the countries of South-Eastern Europe also has to be advanced and supported at parliamentary level. At the invitation of Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council, this topic will be discussed by representatives of national parliaments, the European Parliament, the European Commission and academia. The opening statement will be delivered by Norbert Lammert, former long-standing President of the German Bundestag and now Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. More
