Get to know the major institutions of the EU and their responsibilities.

Principle of the Equality of States

The principle of the equality of all states is not only manifested in the composition of the European Parliament. Smaller states send proportionally more delegates than large states in comparison to their population size. All Member States are represented in EU institutions and provide a commissioner. The voting weight in the Council of the European Union also ensures that smaller states cannot be outvoted in majority decisions.

The EU performs tasks assigned by treaties. It implements Community law primarily in its competence areas.

The following three institutions are involved in the legislative process:

  • the European Parliament as the representative body of European citizens
  • the Council of the European Union, in which the individual member states are represented
  • the European Commission, which protects the interests of the EU as a whole
