Inter Pares

Inter Pares is an EU project to strengthen parliaments in third countries. Since 2024, the Austrian Parliament has been cooperating with the National Assembly of Zambia as part of this project. The main focus is on democracy education and strengthening parliamentary oversight rights. The administrative exchange takes place on site and in online conferences between the Zambian National Assembly, the Irish Parliament, the German Bundestag, and the Austrian Parliament.

As part of the measures in the area of democracy education, the National Assembly of Zambia organized the Youth Parliamentary Academy (YPA) in Lusaka, Zambia, together with INTER PARES. In November 2024, young people from all provinces of the country contributed ideas to promote youth participation and democracy education. In workshops, they gained insights into the workings of the Zambian, Irish, and Austrian Parliaments.

North-South cooperation

Austria had an exchange with the National Assembly of Zambia as part of the North-South parliamentary cooperation from 2022 to 2023.

As part of the EU programme "Support Effectiveness and Transparency in Management of Public Resources (EFFECT)", the National Assembly of Zambia approached the Austrian Parliament to learn more about the role of the Parliament Budget Office in the budget process and to discuss benchmarking the budget analysis process. In the course of several reciprocal visits at MP and civil servant level, an in-depth exchange on successful models took place.

Nigeria

In 2023, a delegation of officials from the Nigerian Parliament visited Austria. This was shortly followed by another visit of Members of Parliament who were interested in Austrian parliamentary practice. They were focused on various aspects, such as the Visitor Center, the concept of an "open parliament," and active citizen participation. The committee system, which plays a central role in the political process, also attracted the delegates' attention. In addition, they were very interested in the significant function of the Constitutional Court in the legislative process.
