Western Balkans

Western Balkans as a foreign policy priority

Austria actively supports the accession of the Western Balkan countries to the European Union. The region is, therefore, also a foreign policy focus of the Austrian Parliament's activities. The six countries are at different stages of the accession process.

The Austrian Parliament's involvement in the region focuses on capacity building and strengthening democratic processes in the countries as well as on democracy education.

The Austrian Parliament offers the Western Balkans Fellowship Programme in cooperation with the European Fund for the Balkans (EFB). It also participated in the national partnership with Montenegro as part of the EU INTER PARES project.

INTER PARES Montenegro

INTER PARES is an EU project to strengthen parliaments in third countries.

The Austrian Parliament, together with other parliaments of EU member states, provided expertise during the partnership with the Parliament of Montenegro to strengthen the Parliament's control function.

Western Balkans Fellowship Programme

To strengthen democracy, parliamentarianism and the rule of law in the countries of the Western Balkans, the Austrian Parliament offers a Fellowship for employees of the parliamentary administrations of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Democracy Workshop International

Parliament's Democracy Workshops teaches children and young people about democracy and parliamentarianism, thereby strengthening democratic awareness and participation.

With the support of the Parliamentary Administration, institutions based on the Austrian model of the Democracy Workshop have also been set up in the Parliaments of the Western Balkan countries Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania. There is also cooperation with North Macedonia, Slovakia, Georgia, and Ukraine.
