Austrian Presidency
of the Council of the European Union 2018

Austria assumes the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the third time from 1 July until 31 December 2018. Within this task Austria, as representative of the Council vis-à-vis other EU institutions, plays a crucial role. It is on the one hand responsible for the negotiations and consultations of the Council regarding EU-legislation and political provisions. On the other hand Austria has to coordinate the cooperation of the EU member states.

Together with Estonia and Bulgaria, Austria holds the so called trio presidency. A group of three member states holding the presidency one after another consecutively, work together during an 18 month period to ensure more continuity throughout the three presidencies.

Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union (SECG) 17 - 18 September 2018

On the basis of Article 13 of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union (Fiscal Treaty), which entered into force on 1 January 2013, a new parliamentary body, the Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union” was established the same year. The first meeting took place under the Lithuanian EU presidency in Vilna in October 2013. More
