Following Croatia's application for membership in the European Union in Athens on 21 February 2023, the Council of the European Union asked the Euroean Commission to prepare an opinion on Croatia's application. Having received a positive opinion from the European Commission, the European Council granted Croatia candidate status, and the negotiations were officially launched on 3 October 2005.
After successful negotiations, the EU Member States decided to close the accession negotiations with Coratia on 30 June 2011, thus making it possible for the Accession Treaty to be signed on 9 December 2011. At a referendum held on 22 January 2012, 66.27% of Croation voters supported Croatia's accession to the European Union.
On March 2012, the Croation Parliament unanimously ratified the Accession Treaty of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union with 136 yes votes. Following the ratification procedure in alle EU Member States and Croatia, accession is scheduled for 1 July 2013.
