On October 15, 2024, the exhibition "Torn from Life”, conceived by the international memorial site Yad Vashem, opened in the Austrian Parliament. 85 years after the founding of the "Central Office for Jewish Emigration” in August 1938, this exhibition commemorates a particularly dark part of our history. The "Anschluss" of Austria to Nazi Germany marked the beginning of an era in which the lives of Jews changed radically overnight: they went from being respected citizens to outcasts of society and were forced to leave Austria. Many others were deported to concentration camps. The exhibition reminds us never to forget the suffering of the displaced and murdered Jews, and aims to raise awareness of the darkest chapter in Austrian history and strengthen the fight against antisemitism. It is an important step in the partnership between Parliament and Yad Vashem since September 2022.
